2019 Howard M. Shum Awards

As we usher the new year, let’s take one final and definitive look at the best of 2019.

Film - “Parasite” Directed by Bong Joon Ho. With all the twists and surprises in this great film, the less you know going in, the better it’ll be. Just know it’s about a family of con artists in South Korea.

Foreign Language Film - “Birds of Passage” Directed by Ciro Guerra and Cristina Gallego. Written by Jacques Toulemonde Vidal, Maria Camila Arias. Instead of choosing Parasite again, I’m picking another good film. This is set in Columbia in the late ’60s - early ’70s and about the start of the drug trade there. It is Godfather-esque.

Director - Bong Joon Ho. “Parasite” South Korea has been making some of the best cinema in the past decade not just of Asia, but of the world.

Actor - Eddie Murphy “Dolemite Is My Name” Murphy plays Rudy Ray Moore who wants to make a movie and nothing will stop him, be it lack of funds or acting skills.

Actress - Jessie Buckley, “Wild Rose“ Just out of prison with kids she doesn’t know how to raise, this aspiring country singer living in Scotland longs to sing in Nashville. Things happen, not in a Hollywood way and that’s a good thing.

Supporting Actress - Kathy Bates, “Richard Jewell” Sam Rockwell was also excellent in this true story by Clint Eastwood.

Supporting Actor - Shia LeBeouf “Honey Boy“ It’s interesting to see LeBeouf play a character based on his father who shouldn’t be looking over a kid.

Screenplay - “Parasite” Written by Bong Joon-ho and Han Jin-won. Too many TV shows and movies are predictable. I like watching things that I can’t guess will happen such as Parasite.

Cinematographer - Roger Deakins “1917” Set in World War I, Deakins made it seem as if the entire film was made with one continuous shot. It’s an incredible feat!

Television Show Drama - “Mr Inbetween” The life of a hitman in Australia when he’s not killing people.

Television Show Comedy - “PEN15” Two adult women playing 13-year-olds is good comedy.

Television Actor - Mahershala Ali “True Detective” I liked all the True Detective seasons, yes including season 2.

Television Actress - Emilia Clarke “Game of Thrones” Daenerys of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regent of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons.

Cartoon - South Park. Matt Stone and Trey Parker continue to be the at the top in satire in our generation. The good thing is they have no fear to go to where other fear to tread. Mega corporations and dictatorial governments beware.
